Q2

5/7/19

I must admit that my expectations of my first week were beaten by what it was actually like at the Lenovo offices. Everyone has been really helpful and approachable, which has made my understanding of the information overload throughout the week a little easier. The offices are great too, the environment and the people have made me comfortable for the meantime, I’m sure the chaos that awaits with my role will soon change this. My role sounds as if I’ll be liaising with different agencies for smaller events and also creative initiatives for commercial (channel) objectives, which I am really looking forward to being involved in. My biggest challenge of the week would have to be getting into the swing of using Skype for Business for calls, and also generally adjusting to the full-time working routine. Both of these will undoubtedly be overcome in time.

12/7/19

After finishing the first fortnight at Lenovo, I’m excited to see what this year here brings. This week I’ve been included on some calls with our agencies and briefs, and now I have my calendar building up with plenty of events for promoting Lenovo products and services. The next quarter was outlined by the Channel webinar, which was helpful to see what the sales and marketing objectives are moving forward. I also went to Milton Keynes to meet with one of our distributors, to hear their marketing plans for us. This was interesting as it is an angle of marketing I’ve never had access to before, as they are not an agency to us yet they are proposing creative plans. The biggest challenge of the week has probably been understanding the language used in the meetings, as acronyms play such a big role in the Lenovo culture and environment; I now keep a list in the back of my notebook with the hope that it will help me remember them over time.

19/7/19

The pace really picked up this week on the work-front. I am now taking over some of the smaller events and also a couple of the bigger ones too. This has meant that a small milestone of having individual calls with agencies to brief them on certain projects is now coming into play. I’m finding it really motivating having my own projects as much as it is daunting, and I am lucky that I’ve got the support of my team to guide me through the steps that are needed. It is interesting being on the other side of the table when having meetings with agencies, as I have been a work experience on the other side before. Our team trip to London to see our Comms agency was interesting as they propped so many great campaign ideas, and it was more interesting hearing the team’s opinions and concerns, which leads us to a decision for the next part of the process. Similarly for our channel marketing agency, we had a meeting that involved us making a timeline for how to move forward and improve our strategies. The liaising with agencies is non-stop, and a great learning opportunity. The biggest challenge of the week was probably having the confidence when briefing the agency on my own, however with the amount of calls I have listened to like them, I took on ‘fake it until I make it’ which helped. The week was nicely ended with our company Summer Party.

26/7/19

This week has went really quickly as I’ve been a lot busier. In preparation for my colleague to go on holiday, I’ve been in a lot of calls and meetings so that everything can keep progressing while she is away. This included going to London for a meeting with one of our agencies, presenting our commercial marketing plans to them and seeing how their work can align with our projects. This was interesting as I learned the pros and cons of some of these collaborations, especially the limitations of funding. More generally, I have been preparing for an internal event next week, working with the agency to make sure the creatives are right and the delivery is arranged.

2/8/19

This week has been really mixed. Aside from the odd jobs here and there for finding assets for partners and creating spreadsheets for POE, I have had a fairly busy week. We had our internal ThinkBook launch, where all the creatives I had collaborated with our agencies through delivered, and these were proven popular, helped by the cupcakes! I also went to The Oval for the 4P, Marketing and Intel catch-up conference day. Some of the technology presentations were a little too technical for my understanding but nevertheless, the other presentations were really useful for understanding the company progress and also how our team can help the other teams’ objectives. I was then invited to see the hospitality options for Twickenham Six Nations Rugby and Wimbledon for 2020. This involved a tour around Twickenham stadium, which was a great experience.

9/8/19

The pace this week slowed down slightly at the beginning, the summer holidays have meant that a lot of projects have come to a halt. However, as I had annual leave booked to go to France this weekend, I also had to make sure my inbox was clear and my list was ticked off. This week consisted of lots of briefings and pitches from different channel media agencies, and also our ideas escalated for one of our bigger events to the next stage of our progress. A couple calls were made to event platforms too by myself, this was a good experience as they were pitching to me, having to prepare questions and leading the call was a new challenge for me.

16/9/19

This week went very quickly as I was away until Tuesday, and then we I had a meeting in London to hear the pitches for our big education event that we are planning at the moment. This was really interesting, as they provided with two very different ideas, and this allowed my experienced colleagues to share their opinions on both to find a solution. Catching up on emails was not too difficult, although nearer the end of the week, the pace picked up on different ongoing projects, including our hospitality event research. The experience of having time off and catching up was new, and wasn’t too painful but I bet the next time it will be a little more hectic. Nevertheless, I’m doing better for the rest.

23/8/19

This week has been a little more hectic. A lot of calls, and a lot of emails for our ongoing projects. However, our media immersion day with Publicis on Wednesday broke up the week and gave our team an opportunity to be our of the office together. I found the meeting really interesting as it explained the strategies behind the media they plan and produce, contextualizing my degree and also how it can lead to certain roles. I think it was one of the best meetings I have had since joining, although the it was a long day of listening, it was well worth it.

30/8/19

This week has been the most challenging yet. With both of my co-workers on holiday/off sick, my inbox hasn't ever been empty, and neither has my diary. Of course, it did feel like I was swimming in the deep end with not having someone to ask for guidance all the time, but it means that I have experience of working under pressure in that environment now. In my placement interviews they liked asking how I managed in challenging situations, this is something I can now refer to at least. Next week should hit the reset button on this, as my coworkers return and can pick up what they have left with me for a short while.

6/9/19

This week has been about tying things up that have been lingering around for a couple of weeks due to holidays and illness etc. This included arranging larger calls with several attendees and representatives. On the other hand my work on SPIF days has began with being included on the briefing of the platinum partner SPIF days. This was a good experience for the future, when I take this on individually. My biggest challenge is keeping up the little jobs, now I use the task list on Outlook to get round this.

13/9/19

The roll of working OOO for the next few weeks has officially started slowly and surely. This included the opportunity to go to Microsoft's Now &Next event - which opened my eyes to the new tech they are launching or enhancing, and also what they are achieving internally. This was a great time/place to network too, and also experience an event on the other side as such, eg. listening to the PPTs and playing the games. The only challenge I found was the techy side of the PPTs but I think the main thing is to take in what I can, and see how it can help what I'm working on.

20/9/19

This week has been very full-on but one of my favourite weeks of placement. Lenovo's Accelerate event allowed me to integrate more with the company, come up with a way to continue networking and collaborating in the company and also learn about the different sides of the business. Sure, the techy breakout did go over my head a bit, but I took from them what I can. I also experienced a talk from Chris Hoy, which was really motivating. I am now going to be running the registration program for internal corporate events, which is a little daunting but will be a good responsibility to have, as events is what I am enjoying most at the moment.

27/9/19

This week has been about preparing for the next in summary. Future Decoded, SPIF launch, BUC and Channel Kick Off all takes place next week, amongst finalizing my event and hospitality work. This has meant that there has been really busy and really quiet points. We had a BETT meeting up in London at our agency, who presented us two stand designs. This was interesting as we have decided to go with a mix of the two, due to hearing the different opinions from my colleagues. I am really excited about this event and happy that I am involved. My challenge this week has been managing my own work and collaborative work, without compromising the other. To get round this I have kept a good record of my to-do list and not been afraid to manage expectations. I am looking forward to a week of staying put in the office, the novelty of tube journey's has definitely worn off!

  • Q3

    4/10/19

Everything has fell into place this week in a lot of ways, meaning that by the end of the week work was pretty quiet. Future Decoded came to an end, and it was great to visit the Excel in preparation for BETT in January. The stand was really busy in between breakouts and it was great to see it from beginning to end. Also, I got to see this Quarter's SPIF in action for our internal launch, this has encouraged me to visit them at various partners too in future. I am excited to start the process for planning the next SPIF as well as see the stand at BETT as it is on a much bigger scale than the stand this week. My biggest challenge this week has been chasing people - having the confidence but also wording to do so politely.

    11/10/19

I felt really strange this week entering my second quarter at Lenovo, with the channel webinar. This was good as it meant that I could hear the up and coming products and news within the commercial side of the business. My colleague has gone on holiday, therefore I have learnt lots about different project processes as a result of people asking me questions in his absence, and me having to find the right answer. It has been challenging but I think what I have learned this week is to manage people's expectations politely and positively.

    18/10/19

This week has had its highlights and lowlights. The Higher Education Conference that I have been working on took place which was managed badly on the other side, meaning that Lenovo staff were not satisfied with the experience. To get round this I agreed, apologized and passed on the feedback for there to be further action. However, the Uni Job Fair in Bournemouth was a real success, we have plenty of interest, meaning we had to go into our back up stock of handouts. It was more tiring than expected but was nonetheless a great sales like experience, as I was selling the placement experience to UWE students.

    25/10/19

This week has been slow and steady, as I waited to go on holiday to France to visit family. The need to tie up my own projects, or at the very leave them in a good place while absent was a new pressure for me. With the help of keeping organized and going through a list though, I managed to do everything that was urgent. This meant that when I left, I didn't have much to handover to my colleagues. I had a mini appraisal, which allowed me to express some small ownership issues, but also get some positive feedback on my progress so far.

    1/11/19

I felt really rested coming back to work after a few days off, luckily my inbox wasn't too bad. Although I did return to find out that my colleague is leaving in three weeks, which was a little shock. This means that I am going to take on the more regular projects that he would oversee until a replacement is onboard. This is really daunting but I need to think of it as a good learning experience. It was a relief to hear that nothing blew up while I was away in every other respect, and this gives me more confidence for the next time go on annual leave in full time work (as I was a bit nervous about what I was coming back to). Good to be back though, next holiday - Christmas.

    8/11/19

So this week has been fairly quiet, which has allowed a strong focus on the Student project with the other placement students. Our ideas involves forming a student ambassador program and a social media campaign, as well as a student careers page. We are due to present our ideas to our managers on Monday, so the pressure is on to make sure our presentation is refined ready for then. BETT is filling my inbox at the moment, and I am due to have more involvement in this large scale event, and I look forward to the final months of preparation for this. My biggest challenge this week has been using my time productively while my inbox has been quiet, this has meant that I have organized me placement notes from my uni work side of things, so I am up to date.

    15/11/19

The pace has really picked up this week, I have gained several of my own projects to handle, which is really exciting and motivating. This has helped me build my confidence prior to my colleague leaving next week. Also, the onboarding of a new agency has been interesting to learn from, what they require to be set up has been good to take note of for the future. Also, our student project presentation didn't go as planned, so my challenge of the week was covering all bases, preparing for the next proposal in a week's time. With some time dedicated to it, whilst juggling my other new projects, I think we have got there.

    22/11/19

So this week was the final week to get as much knowledge out of my colleague before he leaves for his next role. This meant tying up loose ends in preparation for the chaos that's about to hit, but also enjoy the leaving do in London at Circus. Beforehand, I went on a tasting at our Christmas Party venue at 8 Northumberland Avenue, which was such a great experience. Some challenges with one of our busiest agencies has meant that certain things have slid under the radar from both sides, so to get round this I have set up weekly calls about my key projects so both sides are in the loop.

    29/11/19

Saying this week has been stressful would be an understatement. With it being the first week without one of my colleagues, the other one has had to take compassionate leave for a fortnight. Therefore, it's been sink or swim with learning rapidly and juggling several projects at once for three people's workloads. This has been a great experience from the point of view of juggling and learning new parts of the business. However, I am counting down until a bit or normality hits. In the meantime, my to-do lists are helping me manage my work, and also learning how to prioritize has been key to ensure the right deadlines are met.

    6/12/19

This week has been equally as challenging, however now it is done I am so relieved and proud that I got through it. It has meant that I have no worries with coping when there's just 2/3 of us in the team until we have a permanent replacement. The key skills I have learnt over the past fortnight have been in communicating effectively and clearly to get the information I need so I can learn of new projects quickly, also prioritizing projects and queries. Thinking on my feet and taking initiative with limited experience and knowledge I have has been essential, and is something I can take on for the rest of my placement and future roles.

    13/12/19

This week has had a dose of normality this week, with my colleague returning from leave. This has meant that it has been major catch up mode on various parts of different projects, but nevertheless it was nice to feel like I'd kept the ball rolling while she was away, despite the difficulties. I am enjoying working as a bigger team, but also learning how to appreciate different people's priorities compared to my own, when needing their support on something. As Christmas nears, it's a challenge to get everything completed in the shorter quarter, but just got to keep doing what we can to get everything executed in time.

    20/9/19

This week has been an interesting one, my colleague has needed to go on leave again, so there is natural confusion over what was escalated on her return last week. The skill that I am learning is prioritization, as some projects are easier to ensure execution before the end of the quarter than others. On the other hand, some of the more tricky ones are out of my depth, so realizing what I need help with is another attribute I have had to develop this week in particular. A nice break from the chaos was the work Christmas party, where like a lot of others I enjoyed it to the max. I am the only person in my team working up until Xmas eve, so let's hope it's a smooth couple of days.

    24/12/19

It's now Christmas Eve! Unfortunately, I can't say it's been the easiest couple of days. I have been stressed about getting projects executed, gathering the POE (proof of execution) that I can, and making sure the projects are compliant. Without access to a lot of the systems over budget and POs, I have had to rely on my agencies knowing from previous communications with my colleagues as to how the execution needs to be completed. I have tried my best, and that's all I can do in the circumstances these are. So onwards with Christmas, a well needed break!

    Q4

    3/1/20

Happy New Year! The Christmas break was not long enough...although the first week back only being two days has made the start easier. I am somewhat ready to sort out the mess of certain projects not having been executed last quarter, and I am ready to start working as a full team again. There's a big month ahead with the BETT event, which we have been preparing for 6 months!

    10/1/20

So this week has been challenging in the sense of keeping my stress levels at bay. My colleague has returned and has been told to work on only the BETT event in the next couple of weeks, which leaves me still holding the rest of the projects up whilst she is busy. We have learned that due to budget cuts, we are suffering in our department, meaning that we must ensure everything gets executed this quarter; as last Q was so messy too. I feel quite a lot of pressure, I take a bit of comfort that we have a more stable team now, I just have to try the best I can.

    17/1/20

This week I have managed to sort out my workload. I was reassured by my colleague that some thing will have to wait until after BETT, even if this means letting some people down across the business. This has lightened my shoulders for the next week ahead when I am working at BETT all week. Everything is in fairly good shape, except for a couple of deficits we are in with our agencies, which is down to the staff shortages, my inability to assist on budget handling, and our agencies holding the fort for us recently. These are difficult conversations, but nevertheless good experiences to be involved in, as I see how challenging discussions should be led from client to agency.

    24/1/20

BETT week! This has been one hell of a long week, but so worth it. I have really enjoyed seeing the mock-ups on my screen turn into real life right before me. It's been so lovely meeting the people I have been in calls with all this time too, and networking with new people across the business as well. I feel like I have much stronger working relationships with people now, so hopefully this should impact my day-to-day activities too. It's fair to say whilst having one of our main agencies right beside us all week was productive, some things have slipped through the cracks this week, which is hard to accept. However, I have to remind myself of my experience, and despite the staffing issues we have, there is a limit to what I can do without the support of others 24/7.

    31/1/20

So that's January wrapped, the first month of 2020. This week has been a rollercoaster, and luckily I write this on my day in lieu as I worked at BETT last Saturday. I felt this week it was one step forward, two steps back in general. So many of my projects were like walking in treacle, and this was beginning to be picked up by my seniors. This was tough, as I was still having to maintain a workload that didn't allow me to fully learn and understand elements of the job, and inclined me to rush the actions I took. I took some advice from HR, and followed up with a meeting with my manager to discuss how I can work my efficiently, and get the clearance to do this. From now on, I am going to keep a spreadsheet as a tracker of actions and projects, so I can present this to my General Manger and Line Manager as they both seems to be confused on my workload as I work with them both on different projects. Hopefully this helps with my stress management, and allows my learning experience to improve, and overall improve my performance.

    7/2/20

How is it already February?! It's been a really productive week. The student roadshow has really got going with choosing the set up, finalizing costs and creative discussions. A few other channel marketing projects have come my way, away from the BAU things so I'm sure they'll be great learning opportunities. The hospitality status is improving, getting closer to the invites being put in production. I had a real treat going to Cowarth Park for an all day meeting with one of our agencies around several projects. I also visited one of our SPIFF days, which was useful to see how we use the space on the salesfloors, and also good for reviewing how we can incentivize the salesfloors better on these days.

    14/2/20

This week has been about tying up the loose ends of the projects that have been plodding along for sometime. This has meant pushing the agencies a bit, which is out of my comfort zone but will hopefully show good reward. This has allowed me to refine my knowledge of the processes involved with running these marketing projects at Lenovo. Such as running creatives past by my seniors, getting compliance approval of alliance funding, making any changes, then sending into production to execute within the quarter. My biggest learning for this week has been giving negative feedback to agencies, but in constructive way to push for the best performance. I learnt this specifically following my SPIFF visit last week.

    21/2/20

Due to the consumer event looming next week, and my day's holiday as well, this week is full speed ahead to get my quarter's activities up and running. One way of helping this, was how I took the initiative to have a training call on the alliance funding compliance requirements with our Marketing Operations team in Italy. This was really helpful as it helped me recognize how I can work more efficiently on my current projects to minimize the amount of changes that need to be made once reviewed by Ops.

    28/2/20

I was OOO most of this week, helping with the consumer retail event RX20. This showed the retailers the next consumer product to be launched this year, so they can choose their strategy for the Back To School range. I mainly helped as meet & greet staff, which allowed me to network easily when the evening event took place where I heard from different retail experts, such as the head of Asos and Sainsbury's. I thoroughly enjoyed looking at the other side of the business that I don't tend to see much of.

    6/3/20

This week I had my placement review with my Placement Development Advisor, which was like a careers workshop but also got me thinking about my final year work. This was helpful to ground myself as a student, and to remember that it may feel like I've been doing my role for ages but I still have room for mistakes in my lack of experience. I also received my first bit of feedback from my manager: my strengths being resilience, multitasking and networking, and my room for improvement being more confident to check which projects I am actioning or simply shadowing. Alongside this, I feel like my final year project brainstorming should start, so from now I am going to make an extra effort to think of what I'd like to/not like to do. And of course, make an effort to improve as suggested by my manager.

    13/3/20

This week I participated in Lenovo's WILL Forum (Women In Lenovo Leadership). This was great to understand the initiatives that Lenovo are implementing for Diversity and Inclusion but also see where their ambitions can be focused based on the experiences and ideas that came from the room's feedback. I also heard about Jane Ashworth's (Channel Director) career in tech and her learnings, which was insightful as I work with her from a distance quite frequently. With the coronavirus rapidly unfolding, 80% of my projects have been postponed/cancelled for the quarter/next quarter. I think this is a good opportunity to find different activities to run but also shadow different parts of the business potentially.

    20/3/20

As the coronavirus has escalated, I have spent the majority of the week working from home for the foreseeable future. Due to the strange situation as well, a lot of my workload has changed as the events I was working on for this Quarter and the next have been postponed or cancelled. This includes our student roadshow, which is a real shame, however we plan to propose a new plan to the managers next week to still round off the project. This sudden change has given me time to make some progress on the university side of things, such as brainstorming grad project and dissertation ideas, consolidating my portfolio and CV and also chasing for my feedback forms. I have received my line manager's so far, which is generally really positive and encouraging. One area of improvement for me to tackle for the remaining months is refining my initiative when I don't know something, a way to show this is to ask more questions and when doing so suggest a solution (and if it's wrong, then it's wrong). Next week will involve forward planning for the next quarter, which will be interesting as we will have to move to being more digital than event space on commercial.

    27/3/20

This week has been very bizarre, with us going into full lockdwon due to coronavirus and working from home becoming a new normal. Aside from this though, our Q1 budget has been allocated, and an awful lot has had to go towards cancellation fees for events that would've happened last/this quarter. What is left is very BAU projects, but luckily Sally and the team have given me a couple of small projects to run. The main thing this week has been staying productive, so building this blog and fulfilling my coursework has been a real focus this week. I'm looking forward to the student interviews next week, and it will no doubt make me reflect on my own experience last year.

    Q1 (+ Handover weeks in Q2)

    3/4/20

So it's my final quarter at Lenovo?! It's come around so quickly. This week has been successful and challenging, but nevertheless productive. My new projects have begun, and this is keeping me very busy. On the positive side, we had the interviews of the students who will be replacing myself and Sam, which was a really interesting experience. This was valuable to see what set people apart in the competitive job market, and also seeing what others in my age bracket have on their CVs, and the communicative skills they have. The more challenging side of this week has involved having to chase a lot of people for various tasks which is something I don't enjoy doing but also can become frustrating. As an intern, sometimes another push from another direction is needed to get a response out of someone, which is tough, but providing the job gets done, that's what matters.

    9/4/20

Another week in lockdown has gone by, and the nomrality of using video conference calls has really settled in. I think I've now found a new routine, which is working pretty well considering the circumstances we are in. The challenge I overcame this week was trying to get a project underway quickly and independently. This was tricky at first because there are still elements that are new to me such as budget management and alliance checks, however this was resolved once I had the bigger picture when asked about with my team.  Next week, my collegue is on holiday so I have one full to-do list, but I think with some routine and lists I should pull through just fine (as there's not much else to distract me at the moment!)

    17/4/20

This week has involved a lot of multitasking due to my collegue being on leave this week and it being fairly fresh in the quarter still. This has been great in some respects because it's proven to myself that my instincts and problem solving skills have developed so much during this year. In other respects it has been challenging as a lot of projects are coming into play next week, so this week has been hectic with keeping my projects going without compromising the progress of others. Sometimes I've reached out for help on more financial or data information, althought I think I have managed this week pretty well. My biggest challenge at present is getting my head around the new finance system ANAPLAN, so I think I am going to ask for some 1:1 help after having a play on it.

    24/4/20

So this week has been really tough, with two of my virtual events having technical issues and being customer facing. As marketing, internally we are held accountable. So on the positive side of these mistakes, I implimented my problem solved skills to schedule review calls with the stakeholders, and also brainstorm solutions for future virtual events as lockdown doesn't seem to be easing up anytime soon. One learning I have taken from this is week to own your mistakes and take them to your team and manager so they can support you through finding a solution and move on from the mistake.

    1/5/20

This week has been very testing as the new budget management system has been handed to me to manage for B2B Marketing. As well as this, collating POE was rather tedious. Nonetheless, these are good admin skills to have on file despite how they test my patience. This has been rewarding as the progress I have made with the new system for example, is apparently further than the majority of the EMEA region countries. Alongside this, another virtual event has been moving along swiftly, and taking on the learnings from the hiccups last week has nudged me to sense check everything. I am excited for a week's time when I have an extra long Bank Holiday weekend booked off, as WFH during lockdown is taking its toll. However, it's somehow May so it really is flying past. Ironically, as of today, it is a year since my job offer at Lenovo.

    7/5/20

I'm very relieved to be writing this before going off 5 days. It's really needed, the continuous conference calls have taken it out of me, and luckily I believe I'm leaving everything in quite a good place so it shouldn't be too hectic coming back.  The next webinar is taking shape, and I have tried to be more strong in my approach towards managning those senior to me to get the to-do list down. Also, I have learnt that some white lies are necessary to get things done too in Marketing. One key learning I have taken from the past couple of weeks is that, whilst working from home, it's important to block time in the diary for lunch or even doing admin tasks. Otherwise you never get a break from others seeing you're 'available'. Ready for the rest days ahead, and back at it for another push towards reaching the end of my placement year.

    15/5/20

I was really glad that I took a couple of days off after the bank holiday weekend, I feel far more motivated and refreshed for it. The highlight of this week inlcuded the WEP Event, which was again virtual but was a complete success unlike the past couple I have been involved in. I think  this was down to me being more strong when I needed something completed to a deadline and managing it end-to-end. A learning for the week has been to check compliancy early on so it's less of a rush before a deadline, as they are naturally so busy with all of the UKI projects! I think my creativity is coming back now I am more rested and more settled in lockdown, which means that my L6/final year brainstorming can come into play, and I can really get hands on with some of the Lenovo campaigns in Channel and also in Education & Workstation.

    20/5/20

Another short week for me as I have booked two days off before the bank holiday weekend.  This has meant that I need to clean everything up before I have a break, so I can rest easy and hopefully leave my inbox in good shape. One of my projects has come together this week, which has been really rewarding, being the revamp of the Case Studies page. A very small project but should become a hub of all case study material for B2B UKI, which is always in high demand from the sales guys. A learning from the week had been blocking out time for admin tasks but also lunch breaks and accepting to stick with them to keep WFH going healthily. However, also knowing what is worth finishing at the end of the day to make it an easier start tomorrow. This was tried and tested when putting together some Virtual SPIFF research for the team within a day.

    29/5/20

This week has been fairly calm workload wise, this has enabled me to have a better eye for detail when reviewing assets for the team, especially for our Acquisition campaigns. In addition to this, I have been able to tweak my work with F1 in Schools to ensure Intel funding compliancy. A bigger project has emerged, which involves our membership with UCISA, that involves using Wordpress to create a webpage for Lenovo on their site. Firstly this involves updating our other BU, DCG, and collating content with them. This is an exciting project as my placement begins to close as it will use my university and placement skills (creativity and project management).

    5/6/20

This week was my first full week in a while so it was filled with tying up loose ends, like collating the content for the UCISA digital exhibition page. This took quite a lot of discipline as I had one day day to align with DCG and also our partner Absolute for content, as well as collating our own in PCSD. Nevertheless, the page looks really clean, so now I need to get the UCISA mailers created with an agency to drive to the site. I also completed my F1iS project and assisted in reviewing the Acquisition campaign assets as I'm now called 'Eagle Eye'. A learning for the week is that sometimes calling peopl ecan be far more efficent than writing an email, especially if there is detail involved with a pressured deadline. Communication and setting expectations is key to a good partnership for sure.

    12/6/20

This week has been a 4-day job, but still productive. I have been involved in developing the 6 webinar projects we have queued up for next quarter, and clearly my learnings from the last few have helped the agency collate the right info from us internally, meaning it's a more efficient planning stage. My eye for detail has also proven useful as I have been reviewing more assets and their suitability for our acquisition campaigns. The learning of the week from me has been that taking a step away for a few minutes and coming back can be really beneficial when working on something I'm finding tedious. An example of this was how I was raising a PO but having difficulty with the funds available in the system not aligning to the exchange rates by a few pence. However, this was solved after a 10 minute break from the PC, so even though some things need to be done, patience can help get it done more effectively sometimes. I have now confirmed after being an offered an extension of my contract that with current commitments in the summer, and only having a 1 week currently extra available, I will be sticking to my original leaving date of the 17th July. This means that the handover process will well and truly begin as of next week before my longer holiday of 8 working days.

    19/6/20

This week has been a call packed week with a rush to tick off the to do list before going on 8 day's leave. This has included collating the content for the UCISA email in July so it's prepared when I return. Also, briefing in more webinars and a channel incentive for next quarter, which differ due to the covid-19 times we are in.  We also had a brainstorming session on a big corporate annual event we run in September/October time, which looks to be a potential hybrid event but with a heavy focus on virtual and production value. This is really interesting to be involved in as the marketing sector is adapting to the world we are currently in. Proving that normality is creeping in though, is how our 'small event' (Merch) requests are picking back up again for myself to manage. Aside from the work side of things, I had my second (last) placement review with my univeristy PDA, which was really successful. I am pleased to have ticked off may of the to-dos from their list including updating my website, setting up an instagram portfolio and being engaged on LinkedIn. The conversation and great reference (see below) has inspired me to keep creating over the summer before returning to Uni, and keep developing my final year project ideas.

    3/7/20

This week has been very short, after being on holiday for the past week and a half. Sure my inbox was overloaded, but other than that work has been quite refreshing to come back to after a decent break. My main priority now is helping the team where I can in preparation for when I leave in 2 week's time. This will look like helping with POE, raising POs, collecting and sharing assets and tidying up any projects I can for them before I go. A key learning lately has been that breaks are really important to help creativity, so hopefully the last push of my placement will be really worthwhile and rewarding for the work I produce.

    10/7/20

It's the final countdown! I now have a week left at Lenovo. I have had a bizarre week full of admin such as PO raising, POE preparation and some odd-jobs project wise. This week has made me reflect on the year I have had: from visiting hopsitality venues, the London Excel, agency offsites, and the Xmas & Summer parties. It's a shame I won't get the 'last' things that I would have had pre-covid, but nevertheless I will make sure my final few days are as much productive as celebratory. My pre-leaving call with HR allowed me to appreciate the more trying and intense times of my placement year, and realise how skills like reslience and prioritisation has come out of those times; this hopefully means I'm better equipped for the job-market post-university. For now... 7 days and counting.

    17/7/20

Today is my last day in my role as Marketing Associate at Lenovo UKI on my placement year. The past year has flown by, filled with many great projects that have been so valuable towards my professional and personal development.

I have had the pleasure of working with very experienced individuals within the Marketing and IT industries, within Lenovo and also with the agencies I’ve had regular contact with throughout marketing projects. I’m so grateful for the support I have had from my team, especially Philip Oldham , Sally Martin & Aisha Hawkes.

As my final year at university approaches, I can take skills like resilience, communication and critical thinking (and many more) from the past year with me to help me with my studies. I wish my fellow interns the best of luck for their final years too Sam Sibley , Ellen McCarthy & Jacob Wheeler.

Despite the last few months of my placement being affected by coronavirus, I will always be grateful for my placement year at Lenovo and to all those that have supported me along the way.

  • UCISA emails
  • Goodbye Lenovo!
  • How did Covid-19 affect me and my placement experience?

A key question I keep getting asked due to the strange times corona-virus has led us into, is how has Covid-19 affected me? My regular routine of commuting for up to 90 minutes per day in my car was replaced by my trip down the stairs at home every morning. My routine of going to the gym 3-4 times per week was switched with daily walks round the block, and home workout routines. Instead of meeting friends, which was a huge part of my work/life balance, I had weekly zoom calls with friends and when things were eased, a few picnics and distanced walks. Where some of my family live abroad, I had to cope with relying on digital meet-ups with them for a long time, which was very challenging. Naturally, these changes affected my work/life balance and mindset as so many aspects of my routine had changed.

To use my time more productively, I refreshed my portfolio website, my LinkedIn profile and made an Instagram dedicated to my media consumption and creations, I collated a page of What To Watch in lockdown so people had some ideas on what they can stream whilst locked-down. For my work, I ensured I stuck to the logging on/off hours I set myself and gave myself regular breaks from my screen (as I soon found out otherwise I would get headaches). I also learned to block out time in my diary for specific tasks so I felt more reward from my days, as well as helping me focus on each task at a time. I also brainstormed alternative marketing strategies and selling points that we could use digitally, such as working on virtual events, creating more detailed web-pages, and creating social campaigns to drive sales and brand awareness. The key skills I think I have gained from this bizarre time is patience, discipline and resilience.
